Wine regions
Lowerland Prieska is the name of the new ward in the Northern Cape, in effect since 2016. Lowerland is located in this ward. In the Griqua language, Prieska means "place of the lost goat."
Robertson is located further inland, about 160 km from Cape Town. The wine region has a warm, almost hot and dry climate. Rainfall is barely more than 300 to 400mm per m2 per year.
The Stellenbosch wine region is deservedly the most famous in all of South Africa. A large number of the best wines come from this coastal region, which comprises approx. 15,500 ha of vineyards (South Africa total approx. 102,000 ha). Of these, approx.
Swartland (Blackland), so named because of the black-looking landscape in midsummer, was primarily known for its wheat fields and animal farms until 20 years ago. However, in this area, located on the west coast, approx.
Enclosed on three sides by towering mountains, Tulbagh's vineyards grow amidst fruit trees and wheat fields. The soils in this area vary greatly. The region is characterized by extreme fluctuations between day and night temperatures.
Known wineries such as Hamilton Russel and Bouchard Finlayson are located in Walker Bay, near Hermanus.
Kapweine does not carry any wines from the Worcester wine region. Large-scale production has been and continues to be carried out in the Worcester wine region, which is located about 120km from Cape Town. Almost a quarter of South Africa's grape harvest is brought in here.
